Oh, hello again, stalker of my nightmares

UPDATE: This works as of June 2023 and is a guide for re-downloading P.T. on a PS4 that already had it before, sadly this won’t work on a PS5 as Konami have stopped the ability to download the game on this system.

It’s that spooky time of year once again and I can think of no better way to spend it than walking through the same corridor over and over again while a screaming baby swings from a blood-drenched fridge above my head and the radio tells me to kill my family. That is if Lisa could stop trying to decapitate me, for like one minute.

I never got to play P.T. originally. I bought my PS4 (Metal Gear Solid 5 Special Edition, big Kojima fanboy over here) in late 2015 and Konami had sadly decided to ruin everyones fun by taking the Playable Teaser off the PS Store by then. I am currently self-isolating at my sister’s and as it turns out, her partner’s PS4 has P.T. on it! Well it does now, he had accidentally deleted it to free up space for other, lesser games like a big, dumb idiot-moron. Thankfully all he needed to get it back was:

  1. Me

So as it turns out, a youtuber known as H-BOB-OMB! has found a downloadable fix by someone/or maybe a collective of people known as WOLOLO which you can still use, 5 years later to re-download the game. The one catch being you must have the licence for it already, i.e. the game must be in your PS4 library.

Both H-BOB-OMB!’s video and the WOLOLO guide do most of the work for what I’m about to share. However, the proxy files that WOLOLO provides are .exe files, Windows only unfortunately. Not to worry though all you Mac users, Linux users, and even Windows users that might want to open strange files from the internet in a separate environment, for I have found a way to download the files safely with my Macbook. And as you don’t have a ‘Me’ handy, I’ll show you how to do it with a ‘You’. The only other things you will need are:

  1. A PlayStation that previously had P.T. downloaded
  2. A computer of some kind, I achieved this on a 2015 MacBook Pro
  3. A Wi-fi connection that both the PlayStation and the Computer are connected to

So, to open the .exe file we will need Windows. Thankfully you can download a couple of things to solve this. Virtual Box by Oracle allows you to open up a virtual environment from your desktop of any OS you have the .iso file for. Download the version for your operating system. You can get the .iso file for Windows 10 from the official website here (it is all fully legal). Open Virtual Box and add a new box. Here are the steps I took:

I chose the 64-bit system but it shouldn’t really matter
You won’t need more RAM than this
Add a virtual HDD, as you can see I had made one earlier
Choose VDI and then on the next screen: Dynamically Allocated
You probably don’t need anything close to 40GB but i chose it to be safe as I am not sure how much space the files need

Once the settings are all in place, go through the set up of Windows 10 within the Virtual Box. When you get to the page that asks for the product key, press the ‘I don’t have a product key’ button to continue. Choose any version of Windows 10 (I chose Home Edition) and eventually you should be at the Desktop. Once that is all set up, shut it down. You will need to change the network settings for this box, as currently it does not connect to the internet in the way you need it to. On the Virtual Box main menu, select the big settings button for your box, go to ‘Network’ and where it says Attached to: NAT, select Bridged Adapter and Name: en0: Wi-Fi (Airport).

It should look like this like this

Start up the Windows 10 box again and follow these instructions from the browser in the box:

  1. Download Suwi from this link ( http://wololo.net/downloads/index.php/download/8395 ) but DO NOT install it.
  2. 2) Deactivate both windows defender and firewall (Not a scary step as this is a virtual environment). If you have an extra antivirus, disable it.
  3. 3) Download Squid-2.7 from the this link ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/squidwindowsmsi/ ) and install it. Then, make sure that the files were on the c:\squid folder.
  4. 4) Finally install the Suwi program and DO NOT uncheck the box of Squid-2.7 one step before the installation process begin.

This is from a comment by youtube user Alex AC4 Black Flag (Thank you for this). When installing the Suwi .exe file without the extra Squid-2.7 step I would get ‘Copy Failed’ print twice on the installer and then when I went through the PS4 steps, it would fail to connect to the internet during the connection test. The steps above fixed that for me. I still had one ‘Copy Failed’ but it appeared to not stop the process working.

Once that has been downloaded, you can follow the steps from the H-BOB-OMB! video to access the Command Line and type ipconfig to find your IPv4 Address. It should start 192.168.something.something (if it is 10.0.something.something you are on a NAT connection and need to change it to Bridged Adapter as stated above). Now leave the virtual box on and connected to the same Wi-Fi as your PS4 and run through the steps from the WOLOLO guide to set up a custom Wi-Fi connection routed through your PC (within your other PC!) on the PS4, for the lazy among us the steps are as follows:

  1. Go to NETWORK settings > Set up Internet Connection -> use LAN/WiFi > Custom > Automatic > Do not specify > Automatic > Automatic.
  2. Now you are on PROXY screen, choose USE and type your proxy IP address with PORT 808.
  3. Complete the network setting.

During the ‘Test Internet Connection’ step, if it fails to connect to the internet there is a problem either with the squid box download (hence the extra step above), your firewall setting on the virtual box/computer or the network set up (which again should be fixed by the above steps).

If everything is marked successful during the ‘Test Internet Connection’ stage then congratulations! You are now routed through the virtual box. Following the WOLOLO guide again, the next steps are as such:

  1. Go to DOWNLOAD notification.
  2. If P.T. download error was there, press OPTIONS then DELETE (if its not there, you are OK).
  3. Go to LIBRARY.
  4. Choose P.T.
  5. Download P.T.

If everything has been successful, you should start seeing P.T. download. It will probably take a while as it is a complex route for your PS4 to take. Once it is downloaded, reset your PS4 NETWORK settings to what you had before, shut down your Virtual Box (If all is well you can safely delete this environment with all the files) and Voilà! You can now shit your pants all over again!

The download took just over an hour

I hope this helped those of you with this very specific issue and i wish you all a very Happy Halloween!
